This weekend will see the last home game of Liverpool captain Steve Gerrard and boy have the media been having a field day with it, cue endless former players and team mates of Gerrard lining up to applaud a planned guard of honour for him and his achievements. No doubt we'll have a minutes silence for the lack of a Championship medal around his neck as Liverpool fans up and down the country cry foul by the FA who orchestrated their demise throughout the last 25 years. There will be so many camera's outside the crumbling former fortress of Liverpool interviewing the locals that you'll think you are watching an episode of Crimewatch. It has also be raised on more than a few occasions how he had a cousin die in the Hillsborough disaster...never one to shy away from a good spotlight, Liverpool fans have been lapping this up all around the country as proof that 'Steve G' is one of them. Of course when interviewed after the Chelsea draw virtually sealed Thursday night Europa League football for the skip rats, Gerrard himself made a great play about how he was a Liverpool fan. Hmmmm, I must have imagined tales of Gerrard wearing a united shirt with 'Robson' on the back that he was forced to take off by his dad...and probably sold...or I dreamt I saw pictures of a young 'Steve G' wearing an Everton strip (in full kit wanker mode) posing proudly next to the old Division One league winners trophy, at least you actually did get near one then Stevie. But I am being picky, so why won't i applaud his illustrious career?
Well firstly I still am waiting for his apology to Herrera after he deliberately and disgustingly stamped on his ankle during the United humiliation of the bin dippers at KKKlanfield, Gerrard asked his good friend Geoff Shreeves for an interview to apologise, very humble of him, but sadly he completely missed the opportunity to apologise to the actual victim - Herrera. Scousers reading this might want to take note that Herrera going in for a challenge then withdrawing so there is no contact did not give Gerrard the right to stamp in retaliation, he also is not the victim in this. His team mates got an apology, his manager, the fans...nope, no apology to the innocent man he tried to hurt and even after he stamped on Herrera he innocently looked at the ref and for a brief moment tried to claim innocence, nice and honest character eh? That must be a one off though surely?
Steve Gerrard has been involved in a good few incidents of 'reckless challenges' and even diving, incidents that if he had been born Stevan Jerrard of an Easter European country he would have been slammed for being unsportsman-like and a stain on our beautiful game. Ask Carrick and Boateng who have seen Gerrard sent off for tackles on them if the assaults on them from Gerrard was just innocent excitement, or defenders and opponents who have had penalties, bookings and free kicks awarded against them for Steve Gerrards brilliant sportsmanship in throwing himself to the floor without contact is just the momentum taking him down and he was just being cheeky. Away from the game he is a nice guy though right? As long as you allow him and his thug pack mentality friend to choose the music then they are sound...well he and his friends are from Liverpool.
No, this weekend I shall remember Gerrard for 'that' delicious slip that meant he leaves the English game with exactly the same amount of Premier League winners medals as myself...and you, the reader. Zero. I shall remember Gerrard the man who was the leader of a club that wore T-shirts defending a man found guilty of racial abuse against a black man and still supported him even after he admitted to it. I will remember Gerrard as the player whose two mistakes cost England the game against Uruguay that sent England home early from the 2014 World Cup. I will remember Gerrard as the coward who hides behind his mates on nights out where innocent people will get hidings by a small pack if they don't bow to his wishes. I will remember the loyal scouser who tired to force a move to Chelsea but had to back track when pressure and death threats to his family from those lovable scousers reached a worrying level.
During the following week there will be countless articles of his greatness, his loyalty, honesty and dedication that will flow so fast even diarrhoea would be proud, but I prefer to remember the truth and remember the man who in the end let down himself, his club and country.
