So, reports in Spain suggest De Gea has decided to leave us for the lure of Real Madrid, of course these reports are technically rubbish as Real Madrid would not be able to 'agree terms' with de Gea without our permission as he is under contract, obviously these things happen and I don't doubt his agent has unofficially spoken to Madrid at some point. But unless we give permission there will be no talks or transfers this summer no matter what player or that rabble in Spain want, though you can safely assure he will be sold rather than allow him to walk off to Real Madrid on a free next year.
We all know he wants to leave, Christ if being offered a record £200,000 per week for a Goalkeeper isn't incentive enough, or the fact we are about to seriously hammer the transfer market again this summer so our intent for next season is there for all to see...then the best thing to do is to move him on and get top dollar for him. Does he want to stay at all? I think his silence says it all, he has had many opportunities to speak out, reassure the fans or to at least admit he is homesick and/or confused about his future and be truthful. No, he has said nothing at all which I will be honest I find a little insulting, I mean do we have a history of our fans waiting outside the stadium or training ground to insult and abuse players who we know will be leaving us? If he came out and said he wanted to go home to Spain would he be boo'd and face insulting chants in his final two games of the season? No to both of those, of course we don't or wouldn't which is why this silence is a sign of disrespect from De Gea as far as I am concerned.
De Gea provokes in me mixed feelings, yes he has been our outstanding player this season, but we stood by him and demonstrated such faith in his first two seasons when he looked more dodgy than a scousers disability benefit claim. Boy has he dropped some huge clangers as well and the fans never once turned on him, we knew he had the ability and gave him time to prove himself and come good. You browse through United forums on the internet and they all are in perfect sync about how we hold him in such high regard, something he will learn that he won't receive in Madrid
So, that basically has been thrown in our face. So what can De Gea expect from such loyal and caring fans at Madrid? Well currently no man is bigger than the white hankies and they love to wave them at the slightest opportunity to demonstrate their disapproval. They go through managers quicker than John Terry goes through team mates girlfriends and club legends such as Casillias and Ronaldo have recently felt the hostility from the fans that they can be famous for...I know what you are thinking and there is a section of United fans who have, lets say, a lack of respect for Rooney. This is down to Rooney holding us to ransom twice to get a better contract in recent seasons...something you can not use to justify the jeers and boo's aimed at two Madrid icons who have served their club admirably. Compare this to Giggsy in his final few seasons when we knew he should have retired, his performances were sporadic and yet still his name was sung and he faced no hostility.
Back to these mixed feelings, part of me wishes De Gea well for the player he has developed into and playing a huge part in getting us Champions league next season. Then a part of me hopes that he falls flat on his arse, the Madrid boo boys boost sales in Kleenex and De Gea then starts to realise what exactly he turned down just to play for one of the most shallow clubs in recent generations. He will have it tough and there is no doubt he will not be afforded a period of re-adjusting so he must hit the ground running and that is assuming he manages to walk in straight away and take the No.1 slot off Casillias, and as I have said previously, at 34 Casillias still has a good few years in him if he stays and fights for top slot.
Still, he has his wish. It's just a shame he treated us United fans and our club with such little honesty and respect to get what he wanted. A last gesture would have been open and signing a contract extension in exchange for being granted an immediate transfer so we could get as much as possible from the mob in the Spanish capital, but seemingly it appears that De Gea is only out for No.1...and I don't mean the keepers shirt.
